Lewis, a 79-year-old former Dallas Cowboys linebacker and key part of the team's famed Doomsday Defense, has died.
Drafted in 1968, he played 13 seasons with the Cowboys, starting 132 of 134 regular-season games from 1973 to 1981 and appearing in a franchise-record 27 postseason games, including five Super Bowls and two championships.
A two-way standout at Mississippi State, he was named SEC Defensive Player of the Year in 1967 and earned first-team All-American honors, later inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
Despite never making an All-Pro or Pro Bowl team, he was honored as Cowboys Man of the Year in 1981 and named to the franchise's Silver Anniversary Team.
Former coach Tom Landry called him the team’s most underappreciated player.
