A daily vitamin B3 supplement cut non-melanoma skin cancer recurrence by 54% in high-risk veterans.
A new study in JAMA Dermatology found that taking 500mg of nicotinamide (Vitamin B3) twice daily for at least one month reduced the risk of non-melanoma skin cancer recurrence by 54% among nearly 34,000 veterans with a history of skin cancer.
The overall risk reduction across all participants was about 14%, with the greatest benefit seen in squamous cell carcinoma.
Researchers suggest the supplement, which is widely available and has minimal side effects, should be routinely recommended for secondary prevention, especially when started early after diagnosis.
More research is needed on its effects for people without a prior skin cancer diagnosis or on melanoma risk.
