Canada to launch gun buyback for banned assault-style rifles, offering compensation as amnesty ends Oct. 30.
Canada's Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree announced that details of the federal gun buyback program will be released in the coming weeks.
The program aims to compensate owners of banned "assault-style" firearms as the amnesty period for their possession ends on October 30.
The government previously banned over 1,500 firearm models in 2020 and extended amnesty twice, promising compensation but not yet launching the buyback.
While the Ontario Provincial Police will not directly participate, other police services have signed on, and collection facilities are expected to be available.
