The Washington Commanders re-signed defensive end Preston Smith after losing Deatrich Wise Jr. to injury.

The Washington Commanders have re-signed defensive end Preston Smith, 32, to strengthen their defense after Deatrich Wise Jr. suffered a season-ending injury. Smith, originally drafted by Washington in 2015, played four seasons with the team before joining the Green Bay Packers and later the Pittsburgh Steelers. He has 70.5 career sacks and 443 tackles. In a corresponding move, cornerback Jonathan Jones was placed on injured reserve due to a hamstring injury.
