The incident was triggered by a faulty pipe connected to a boiler, detected after staff noticed a chemical smell and inmates reported feeling unwell.
Affected inmates were moved to outdoor areas and later taken to local hospitals, including U of M Ionia Hospital and Butterworth Hospital.
All but two were treated and released back to the jail.
