Minnesota adds 14 solar-powered weather stations to aid farming, funded by $3M from the Clean Water Fund.
The Minnesota Ag Weather Network has installed 14 new solar-powered weather stations, mostly in southern Minnesota, funded by $3 million from the state’s Clean Water Fund.
These stations collect data every five minutes on weather and soil conditions up to 33 feet in the air and 7.5 feet below ground, supporting farming decisions on irrigation, fertilizers, and pesticides.
Data is shared publicly via the North Dakota Agricultural Weather Network and helps model crop water use, runoff risk, and disease forecasts.
The expansion is part of a three-year plan to add about 40 new stations with local partners.
