MESS, a Melbourne museum of rare electronic instruments, opens to the public, featuring historic gear and interactive play.
The Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio (MESS) has opened to the public in Federation Square, showcasing a collection of rare electronic musical instruments including a 1930s theremin, a 1939 Hammond Novachord, and a Fairlight CMI.
Co-founded by Robin Fox and Gotye (Wally De Backer), the "living museum" encourages visitors to play and record with the instruments to preserve their functionality.
The collection, begun with royalties from Gotye’s hit song, highlights Australia’s role in electronic music history and is now more accessible to the public at its new location.
