Lee County prioritizes land buys for its conservation program, focusing on key areas despite funding shortfalls.
Lee County’s Board of County Commissioners has adopted a two-tiered system to prioritize land acquisitions for its Conservation 20/20 program, which protects natural habitats in southwest Florida.
The system ranks properties as Tier I (high-priority) or Tier II (backup options), with nine recommended nominations now moving forward.
Despite the program’s acquisition fund falling below its target, officials remain committed to preserving land on Sanibel Island, Pine Island, and Buckingham.
Established in 1996, Conservation 20/20 has protected over 31,000 acres—27% of Lee County’s land—and works with federal, state, and local partners to advance conservation goals.
El condado de Lee prioriza la compra de tierras para su programa de conservación, centrándose en áreas clave a pesar de los déficits de financiamiento.
