Hundreds of migrant hospitality workers in the UK may be trapped in modern slavery due to deceptive recruitment and debt bondage.
A new report by the charity Unseen reveals that hundreds of migrant workers in the UK's hospitality industry—such as bars, restaurants, hotels, and campsites—may be victims of modern slavery, with some owing debts up to £30,000 after being lured by false promises.
The charity’s helpline recorded a sharp rise in potential victims linked to the skilled worker visa route, with 485 cases reported in food and drink venues and 85 in holiday accommodation between January 2024 and June 2025.
Workers are often charged illegal fees for visas and sponsorship, forced into poor housing, and threatened with deportation if they speak out.
Similar exploitation patterns seen in the care sector are now emerging in hospitality, with many employers failing to cover recruitment costs.
The UK's migration minister has pledged to crack down on abuse.
