Hoot-owl fishing restrictions lifted on Montana rivers due to cooler temps, ending afternoon-to-midnight closures.
Hoot-owl restrictions have been lifted on the Lower Madison and Sections 3 and 4 of the Big Hole rivers in Montana due to cooler temperatures, ending daily fishing bans from 2 p.m. to midnight that were in place to protect fish from stress, disease, and mortality caused by warm water and low flows.
Anglers are encouraged to minimize fish stress year-round by quickly handling fish, keeping them in the water, and reviving them before release.
Annual closures for trout spawning will begin October 1 on the Big Hole, Ruby, and Beaverhead rivers.
