Chinese dissident Yuanjun Tang pleads guilty to spying on Chinese American activists for Beijing.
Chinese dissident Yuanjun Tang, 68, who led a pro-democracy group in Queens, New York, has pleaded guilty to spying on fellow Chinese American activists for Beijing's intelligence service.
Despite publicly criticizing the Chinese Communist Party and founding a nonprofit, Tang secretly collected information on other activists, allegedly to gain permission to visit family in China.
He was granted U.S. asylum in 2002 after spending 12 years in a Chinese prison for his role in Tiananmen Square protests.
Tang faces up to five years in prison and is set to be sentenced in January.
His case is part of broader U.S. investigations into China's efforts to suppress dissent abroad.
