María Verónica Soto, a Chilean woman, reunited with her twin daughters, Maria Beatrice and Adelia Rose Mereu Chessa, after 45 years, following their return from Italy.
The twins were taken from Soto in 1979 during the Pinochet dictatorship, when thousands of babies were stolen from their mothers and illegally adopted, often abroad.
Soto, who had no contact with her daughters since their birth in Hualpén, was reunited with them through a DNA test and the help of the Chilean NGO “Nos Buscamos.” The case is part of a broader effort to address the legacy of forced adoptions during the dictatorship, with a judge recently prosecuting five individuals in connection with the crimes.
