John Martinkus, a respected war correspondent known for his coverage of conflicts in East Timor, Iraq, Afghanistan, Aceh, Burma, and West Papua, died at 56 in Melbourne.
He gained acclaim for being the first and last journalist to report on East Timor’s independence struggle, earning recognition from Timor-Leste’s President Jose Ramos Horta.
A four-time Walkley Award nominee, Martinkus also taught journalism at the University of Tasmania.
He is survived by his three daughters.
