VietJet Air receives its first Boeing 737 Max, nearly nine years after ordering, in a move boosting Vietnam-U.S. trade ties.
VietJet Air, a Vietnamese budget airline, is set to receive its first Boeing 737 Max aircraft, nearly nine years after placing the initial order, with the delivery expected on Sunday.
The event, attended by Vietnamese President Luong Cuong, marks a key moment for Vietnam’s aviation sector and its trade strategy with the U.S., as the purchase is seen as part of efforts to reduce Vietnam’s trade surplus with Washington and lower potential tariffs.
VietJet originally ordered 100 737 Max jets in 2016, doubling the commitment in 2018, and currently operates an all-Airbus fleet with a few COMAC jets leased.
The delivery follows Boeing’s recent deal with Singapore for four P-8A maritime patrol aircraft, though Boeing faces ongoing legal challenges over criminal fraud charges related to the 737 Max crashes in 2018 and 2019.
