Two men pleaded guilty to hate crimes after attacking a transgender couple in a liquor store, resulting in prison sentences.
Two men, Warren Martinez, 31, and Thomas Patnode, 25, pleaded guilty in Franklin County Superior Court to hate crimes against a transgender liquor store employee and her fiancé in Sunderland in July 2024.
The attack followed repeated denials of alcohol sales due to intoxication.
Martinez, who assaulted the clerk, breaking her palate and knocking out three front teeth, was sentenced to five to 10 years in prison.
Patnode, who brandished a knife, received a two-and-a-half-year sentence.
Both victims, who are transgender, suffered physical injuries and emotional trauma, and shared impact statements during the hearing.
The men were initially not guilty when arraigned.
