Twenty Tamil Nadu fishermen, freed after paying fines in Sri Lanka, returned to Chennai.
Twenty Tamil Nadu fishermen from Ramanathapuram district returned to Chennai after being released from Sri Lankan custody following a Rs 5 lakh fine each.
Arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly crossing the maritime boundary while fishing, they were detained in two separate incidents on June 28 and 30.
After paying the fines on August 14, the fishermen were gradually released and flown back to Chennai via an Air India flight, having been issued emergency travel documents by the Indian High Commission.
They were received by Fisheries Department officials upon arrival and are calling for measures to prevent further intrusions and protect their traditional fishing rights.
