The 5th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves, hosted in Hangzhou, China from September 22 to 25, marks the first time the event is held in Asia, bringing together around 4,000 delegates from over 150 countries.
Organized by UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme, the conference aims to strengthen global cooperation in ecological governance, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable environmental management.
A new Hangzhou action plan will be released to guide the programme’s efforts over the next decade, building on the 1971 initiative that supports sustainable human-nature interactions through a global network of biosphere reserves.
China, a founding member since 1973, has 34 designated reserves, the most in Asia.
