A Texas refinery uses Brazilian cattle fat from illegally deforested Amazon land to make jet fuel for major airlines, despite sustainability claims.
A Texas refinery, Diamond Green Diesel, has been sourcing cattle fat from Brazilian slaughterhouses that buy animals raised on illegally deforested Amazon land, according to a Reuters investigation.
The refinery converts the fat into sustainable jet fuel used by airlines like JetBlue and Southwest, which claim emissions reductions under a UN climate program.
Despite certification under CORSIA, the growing demand for biofuels could drive further deforestation, violating Brazilian law.
The company and its partners have not responded to requests for comment.
