198 shipping firms push IMO to levy first global fee on ship emissions, facing U.S. opposition.
Nearly 200 shipping companies, part of the Getting to Zero Coalition, are urging the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to adopt global regulations including the first-ever fee on greenhouse gas emissions to reduce shipping's environmental impact.
The proposal, aimed at transitioning the industry to greener practices, will be discussed at an upcoming IMO meeting in London.
While many nations support the move, the Trump administration opposes it, calling it a global carbon tax and threatening retaliation.
Shipping emissions now account for about 3% of global emissions, and the regulations, if adopted, would apply to large oceangoing ships over 5,000 gross tonnage, which emit 85% of the sector’s carbon.
