Sewage spills in English and Welsh national parks are double those outside, harming rivers despite some parks' better ecological status.
Sewage is spilling into rivers within English and Welsh national parks at twice the rate seen outside these protected areas, according to a report by the Campaign for National Parks and the Rivers Trust.
In 2024, there were 254,808 hours of sewage overflows across 464 sites inside parks, with an average spill duration of 549 hours per site.
Despite some parks having better ecological status than rivers outside, over half of national park rivers failed to meet legal standards, with pollution from sewage and farming to blame.
