Scientists release safe pink dye off Santa Monica Pier to track water flow and pollution in the bay.
Researchers from UCLA and The Bay Foundation are releasing a non-toxic, fluorescent pink dye near Santa Monica Pier from September 15 to 30 to study ocean circulation and how the breakwater affects water quality in Santa Monica Bay.
The dye, safe for people, wildlife, and the environment, will help track water movement and inform efforts to address persistent pollution issues, including the bay’s poor water quality.
The color will be visible for a few hours each day, primarily between 8–9 a.m., while sensors monitor changes.
