Over 7,000 Polytechnique Montréal engineering students will strike Sept. 25–26 over rising internship fees.
Over 7,000 engineering students at Polytechnique Montréal have voted to strike in response to the university’s plan to phase out grants that offset mandatory internship costs, with full elimination expected by the 2027 winter semester.
Quebec students could face an additional $572 in fees, while out-of-province students may pay $1,856 more, representing a 105% and 151% increase respectively.
The student union, led by president Gabriel Comby, criticized the move as placing undue financial strain on students already reliant on aid, while the university cited changing financial circumstances and noted that graduates typically earn starting salaries around $76,000.
The strike is scheduled for September 25–26 and could disrupt academic activities.
