A 6.3-meter whale carcass washed ashore in Singapore; researchers are studying it to determine cause of death.
A 6.3-meter-long baleen whale carcass, likely from the Rorqual family, was found off Tanjong Pagar, Singapore, on September 6.
The cause of death is unknown, and the whale, estimated at six tonnes, was in advanced decomposition.
Recovered by museum staff and Singapore Salvage Engineers, it was secured at a restricted site for research.
This marks the first whale carcass study by the NUS Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum since 2015.
Researchers are collecting tissue samples for genetic analysis, with further details on the dissection and findings to be shared later.
