A 3.7 magnitude earthquake struck near Muswellbrook, New South Wales, on September 16 at 2:20 am, with over 130 residents reporting felt tremors, according to Geoscience Australia.
A subsequent 3.1 magnitude quake was recorded near Bulahdelah hours later, with more than 60 people reporting the shaking.
Both quakes occurred at shallow depths, with the Muswellbrook event at three kilometers.
The region has seen increased seismic activity, including a 4.8 magnitude quake in August 2024 that caused damage and paused mining at BHP’s Mount Arthur coal mine.
While coal mining has been linked to earthquakes elsewhere, experts say a direct connection remains uncertain.
