India's Supreme Court grants interim bail to Mahesh Raut in Bhima Koregaon case due to severe rheumatoid arthritis, citing medical needs.
The Supreme Court of India has granted Mahesh Raut, accused in the Bhima Koregaon-Elgar Parishad case, six weeks of interim bail on medical grounds due to his rheumatoid arthritis, which requires specialized treatment unavailable in prison or at Mumbai’s JJ Hospital.
Raut, arrested in June 2018, had been granted bail by the Bombay High Court in September 2023, but the order was stayed by the Supreme Court at the NIA’s request.
The court acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations, including links to the banned Maoist group, but prioritized Raut’s health.
The interim bail allows time for a final decision on his case.
