ICE detained a man at a Portland school after a domestic violence arrest, sparking local backlash over federal agent transparency.
A 42-year-old man, Denis Rivera-Martinez, was detained by ICE agents near Gerald Talbot Community School in Portland, Maine, after being arrested the previous day on domestic violence charges. The agents, wearing unmarked vests and driving unmarked vehicles, did not identify themselves to school officials. Portland’s sanctuary policies, which limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, led to the detention occurring in public rather than at a jail. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security stated that ICE is not conducting raids at schools but is obligated to act when individuals pose a threat. Rivera-Martinez, a native of Honduras in the U.S. illegally, remains in federal custody, and the city has since passed a resolution calling for greater transparency and identification standards for federal agents operating locally.
