Spotted lanternflies, an invasive species from Southeast Asia, have spread so widely in the Mid-Atlantic that they appear on weather radar, similar to storms. These insects, which can fly up to 3,000 feet high, damage crops and are hard to control due to their large numbers. Insects appearing on radar isn't new; butterflies and cicadas have been detected before.
