India's coking coal imports are expected to grow significantly as the country aims to boost its steel production capacity to 300 million metric tons (MT) by 2030.
The steel industry, which consumes 95% of coking coal, will see demand rise from 87 MT in 2025 to 135 MT by 2030.
The government's Atmanirbhar Coal Mission aims to increase domestic production to 140 MT by 2030, with policy reforms like 100% FDI in mining to reduce import reliance from 90% to below 80%.
The industry also plans to adopt cleaner technologies to move towards net-zero emissions by 2070.
