Kalaupapa, Hawaii's former leprosy settlement, reopens for guided tours after pandemic closure.
The remote Hawaii leprosy settlement of Kalaupapa is reopening for guided tours this month after closing during the pandemic to protect six remaining elderly patients.
Established in 1866, the isolated peninsula was a place of exile for leprosy patients until 1969, and over 8,000 people died there, mostly Native Hawaiians.
Tours, facilitated by Seawind Tours, require a Department of Health visitor permit and are the only way to access the peninsula, which is reachable by plane, mule ride, or hike.
