Longest U.S. anti-war vigil dismantled outside White House amid citywide homeless cleanup efforts.
A decades-long peace vigil outside the White House, advocating for nuclear disarmament and an end to global conflicts, has been dismantled after President Trump ordered its removal as part of efforts to clear homeless encampments in Washington D.C.
Started in 1981 by activist William Thomas, the vigil is believed to be the longest continuous anti-war protest in U.S. history.
The removal was justified as a safety measure, but the vigil's volunteer, Philipos Melaku-Bello, argues it is a civil rights violation and is consulting lawyers.
