Japanese film "Kokuho" breaks box office records, sparking renewed interest in kabuki theater.
In a country dominated by anime, "Kokuho," a live-action Japanese film about two male actors who play female roles in kabuki, has become a box office success, surpassing 10 billion yen faster than any other domestic live-action film since 2003.
Directed by Lee Sang-il and backed by Toho and Sony, "Kokuho" has also revived interest in traditional kabuki theater, with its marketing strategy similar to Toho's anime hits like "Demon Slayer."
The film's demand was 25 times higher than the average in Japan.
