Climate change has made extreme heat and wildfires in Portugal and Spain 40 times more likely.
Recent research by the World Weather Attribution (WWA) indicates that climate change has made the extreme heat and dryness fueling wildfires in the Iberian Peninsula 40 times more likely.
The study found that the weather conditions in July and August were about 30% more intense than in the pre-industrial era.
These conditions led to devastating wildfires that killed eight people, forced over 35,000 evacuations, and burned over 640,000 hectares of land.
Researchers also noted that population shifts from rural areas to cities, leading to neglected overgrown farms and forests, have exacerbated the risk of severe fires.
