Teenagers with severe period pain are at higher risk of chronic pain as adults, study finds.
A study from the University of Oxford published in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health found that teenagers with painful periods are more likely to suffer chronic pain as adults.
Analyzing data from 1,157 participants, researchers discovered that those with severe period pain at 15 had a 76% higher risk of chronic pain by 26, while those with moderate pain had a 65% higher risk.
The study suggests this link may stem from nervous system changes during adolescence, highlighting the need for better menstrual education and support for young people.
