South Carolina's new hands-free law bans holding phones while driving, effective September 1, 2025.
South Carolina's new hands-free driving law took effect on September 1, 2025, banning drivers from holding phones or other electronic devices while driving. Exceptions include using devices in hands-free mode, for navigation, music, or podcasts, or when legally parked or stopped. During the first six months, only warnings will be issued; after that, first offenses will incur a $100 fine, and subsequent offenses within three years will result in a $200 fine and two points on the driver's license. Law enforcement and first responders are exempt while on duty.
