Chattanooga's City Council narrowly approved a 38-cent property tax hike, facing resident opposition.
Chattanooga's City Council voted 5-4 to advance Mayor Tim Kelly's proposal for a 38-cent property tax increase, setting the rate at $1.93 per $100 of assessed property value.
This move, which will generate an additional $44.8 million, was opposed by some residents and Councilman Henderson, who proposed a lower 14-cent increase.
Mayor Kelly defended the proposal, stating it would support city growth and fund raises for first responders, new firefighter positions, and infrastructure improvements.
The council will make a final decision on September 9th.
