Portland opens new shelter with 40 beds, aiming for 200 by fall, part of mayor's plan to add 1,500 beds.
Portland, Oregon will open the NW Northrup Shelter on September 2 in the Pearl District, offering 40 initial sleeping units with plans to expand to 100 beds by October and potentially up to 200 beds if needed.
Operated by The Salvation Army, it will be open from 8 pm to 6 am.
This shelter adds to the 630 beds already created since January and is part of Mayor Keith Wilson's goal to open 1,500 overnight shelter beds by December 2025 to address homelessness.
