Judge criticizes long delay in protecting ancient rock art near Western Australia gas plant.
A federal judge in Australia criticized Environment Minister Murray Watt for an unreasonably long delay in assessing an application to protect Indigenous rock art near a gas plant in northwest Western Australia.
The delay, over three-and-a-half years, led to the destruction of some recommended protection sites.
The judge did not order an immediate decision but suggested a decision is imminent.
The Burrup Peninsula, with some of the world's oldest rock art, was recently listed as a UNESCO heritage site.
The case is set for a September 19 hearing.
