Despite domestic production drops, India's coal imports rose slightly in the first quarter of 2022.
India's coal imports increased by 1.5% to 76.40 million tonnes in the April-June quarter of 2022, compared to the same period last year. Despite the government's push for domestic coal production, state-owned Coal India's (CIL) production dropped by 8.5% in June. However, the Coal Minister assured that India will not face coal shortages during the monsoon season. Non-coking coal imports stayed nearly flat at 49.08 million tonnes, while coking coal imports rose to 16.37 million tonnes.
