Scientists develop new eye-shaping method, EMR, that could replace LASIK, tested successfully on rabbits.
Researchers at Occidental College and the University of California, Irvine have developed a new method called electromechanical reshaping (EMR) that could replace LASIK for vision correction.
The technique uses a platinum "contact lens" and a small electric charge to alter the eye's pH and reshape the cornea.
Tested successfully on rabbits, EMR takes about a minute, involves fewer steps, and uses less expensive equipment than LASIK.
While still in early stages, the method could offer a more affordable and less invasive alternative for correcting vision issues like nearsightedness and astigmatism.
