Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood return for "The Hunt for Gollum," a new Lord of the Rings film set for 2027.

Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Elijah Wood as Frodo will return for "The Hunt for Gollum," a new Lord of the Rings film directed by Andy Serkis, who will also reprise his role as Gollum. The film, set between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, will explore Gollum's backstory. Warner Bros. confirms it's the first of two new Middle-earth films, with filming set for 2026 and a December 2027 release. Peter Jackson will produce alongside Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens.
