Study reveals burnout, conflict top reasons for pastors leaving roles, despite rising job satisfaction.
A study by Lifeway Research found that about one-third of pastors leaving their roles cite burnout or conflict with their church as primary reasons.
The survey of 730 former pastors also revealed that 40% left due to a change in calling, while 53% continue to work in ministry in other capacities.
However, a recent Barna survey showed an increase in pastoral confidence and job satisfaction, with 51% of pastors now more confident in their calling than when they started, up from 35% in 2022.
Despite this, finding younger replacements for aging pastors remains challenging.
