Florida Governor Ron DeSantis plans to open a new immigration detention center to hold up to 2,000 detainees.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis plans to open a second immigration detention facility, nicknamed "Deportation Depot," at the Baker Correctional Institution, 43 miles west of Jacksonville.
The facility will hold 1,300 immigration detention beds, expandable to 2,000.
This follows the controversial "Alligator Alcatraz" facility in the Everglades.
DeSantis justifies the new center as necessary to support the Trump administration’s efforts to hold and deport more immigrants.
The new facility is expected to be operational in two to three weeks at a cost of $6 million.
