E-scooter injuries rise, with alcohol involvement doubling since they became legal on roads.
Since e-scooters became legal on roads in May 2024, alcohol and drug use in patients injured while riding e-scooters has doubled, according to research from St James's Hospital in Dublin.
Helmet use has also dropped from 23% to 18%.
The study found that e-scooter-related injuries now account for 2.5% of all facial injuries at the hospital, up from 1.7%.
Most accidents occurred between 7pm and 6am, with over half involving alcohol.
Researchers recommend mandatory safety training and public awareness campaigns to improve safety.
