Irish disability center residents say staff control their bank cards, raising independence concerns.
Residents of disability centers in Ireland have reported that their bank cards are kept in safes by staff, requiring them to ask for access to their own money.
This finding, from a Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) report based on 13 forums with 103 residents, also highlights challenges with staff shortages, limited decision-making, and communication issues.
Despite these concerns, residents showed awareness of their rights and emphasized the need for more privacy, independence, and access to HIQA inspection reports.
