New Zealand's unemployment rate ticked up to 5.2%, slightly better than forecasts, with wage growth slowing.
New Zealand's unemployment rate rose to 5.2% in the second quarter of 2025, up from 5.1% in the previous quarter and 4.7% from a year ago.
This slight increase is slightly better than the 5.3% forecast but represents a 1.9 percentage point rise since June 2022.
The underutilization rate, including the unemployed and underemployed, increased to 12.8%.
Despite these figures, Finance Minister Nicola Willis highlighted that the rate was lower than Treasury forecasts, attributing the improvement to the government's economic management efforts.
