Social Security ends paper checks, requiring recipients to switch to direct deposit or prepaid cards by Sept. 30.
The U.S. Social Security Administration will stop sending paper checks as of September 30, requiring about 500,000 recipients to switch to either direct deposit or a Direct Express prepaid debit card.
This move aims to modernize federal payments, save money, and reduce fraud, as paper checks cost 50 cents each compared to 15 cents for electronic transfers.
Exceptions will be made for those with mental impairments, living in remote areas, or aged 90 and older.
