ICRA forecasts India's retail mortgage loans to reach $259 billion by 2028, driven by NBFCs and AHFCs.
ICRA predicts that retail mortgage loans in India, provided by non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) and housing finance companies (HFCs), will grow to Rs 20 trillion ($259 billion) by FY2028, up from Rs 13 trillion.
Affordable Housing Finance Companies (AHFCs) will see a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20-22%, while NBFCs will grow at 17-19%.
AHFCs currently make up 11% of the market, with a focus on self-employed borrowers and loans for home construction.
Despite strong growth, concerns exist about repayment capacity and economic uncertainties.
