Hawaii Pacific University has launched a Plastic Recycling Research Facility to convert marine debris, mainly fishing gear, into durable construction materials like plastic lumber for decks and fencing.
Since June 2024, the facility has processed over 227,000 pounds of debris.
It collaborates with a Nebraska company to develop innovative materials and technologies, including interlocking scaffolding for construction and "Nets-to-Roads" projects.
