Vermont engineer revives pay phones for free public use in areas with spotty cell service.
Electrical engineer Patrick Schlott in Vermont is reviving old pay phones for free public use in areas with poor cell service.
Schlott, who works at BETA Technologies, installs the phones, bought and fixed up himself, outside local businesses and institutions, covering all costs including the $2-$3 monthly phone line fees and less than $5 for calls.
The initiative has been well-received, especially by students without cell phones, and Schlott plans to expand the service.
