Russia passes law fining up to $64 for searching "extremist" content online, critics say.
Russian lawmakers have approved a bill that fines individuals up to $64 for searching online for content deemed "extremist," a move seen as a further crackdown on dissent.
The legislation, which will soon be signed into law, punishes those who knowingly search for extremist materials, including through the use of virtual private networks (VPNs).
Critics argue that the vague definition of "extremism" could lead to abuse and limit freedoms, as it includes groups like Alexei Navalny's Anti-Corruption Fund and the "international LGBT movement."
The law also bans the advertising of VPN services but does not prohibit their use.
